Smilodon and Panthera leo atrox

Smilodon:

Los Angeles sculptor, Antone Martin created the steel reinforced concrete replicas of a smilodon and a panthera leo atrox and donated them to the museum in 1949. Martin was a craftsman for the Douglas aircraft plant at El Segundo; he designed special fuselage fittings for airplanes.

The Panthera leo atrox (background) also known as the American lion is a feline that lived in the Americas until approximately 10,000 years ago. Approximately 100 specimens of American lions have been recovered from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.

Often called a Sabre-Tooth Tiger, the Smilodon (foreground) is an extinct feline that lived approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago in North and South America.
