Plan Your Visit

  • Clothing
Much of the Kern County Museum is set out of doors, and visitors should dress with the weather in mind. Summers in Bakersfield can be quite hot (100+ degrees) so hats, sunscreen, and cool clothing are encouraged. Winters in Bakersfield tend to be fairly mild with some fog and rain.

  • Shoes
The Museum is comprised of 16 acres so visitors should expect to walk. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes.

  • Accessibility
Paved paths allow visitors of all abilities to enjoy the 16-acre Museum. Wheelchairs (non-motorized) are available in the Museum Store free of charge.  Interpretive and wayfinding signage are located adjacent to the paths. In addition, the downstairs of the Howell House (during tours), Black Gold: The Oil Experience, Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center, and the Main Gallery are all easily accessible by wheelchair.
