Caliente, California

Located about 22 miles from Bakersfield, the site was first known in the early 1870s as Agua Caliente because of hot springs in the canyon. Later called Allen's Camp for Gabriel Allen, it was named Caliente in 1874 when the Southern Pacific Railroad established a work depot with up to 3,000 men while constructing its line through the Tehachapi Mountains.
