Shafter, California
In 1898, the site was a loading station on the Santa Fe Railroad. The town of Shafter was surveyed in 1913, and in 1914, a subdivision of 7,100 acres was placed on sale by the Kern County Land Company. The town was named after General William Rufus Shafter, the commanding general of the U. S. Army in Cuba during the Spanish American War who lived in the area.
