It’s the most magical time of the year and you won’t want to miss spending part of the holiday season at the Kern County Museum. Last year, over 3,000 visitors got into the holiday spirit by visiting the Kern County Museum during Clock Tower Holidays, a month-long celebration of the holiday merriment of the past.

Holiday Lamplight Tours
December 3, 2011
3:00 to 8:00pm
During Clock Tower Holidays, the historic homes are beautifully decorated in seasonal splendor. On the special night of Holiday Lamplight Tours, visitors take a ride on a horse-drawn wagon and see the soft glow of lanterns throughout the village. Costumed villagers welcome visitors to the homes and business, and take visitors back to a simpler era when family and friends gathered together to celebrate this special time of year. In the Bandstand Green, local entertainers provide a magnificent array of holiday music for your enjoyment. There will also be organ music in St. John’s Episcopal Mission, a hand-bell choir at the Woody General Store, and piano music in the Howell House. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children; members price $5 for adults and $3 for children. Advanced sale tickets are available, and group rates for 20 or more can also be arranged in advance.  Refreshments and carriage rides are an additional fee.

Clock Tower Holidays Volunteers
There are a variety of volunteer opportunities at the Museum during Clock Tower Holidays. We need volunteers for costumed interpretation, decorating, helping children with crafts, handing out cookies, and more!

Building Decorators
Help our holiday guests take a step back in time by decorating one of the museum’s fifty-seven buildings!  There are a variety of decorating opportunities including the 1891 Howell House, 1868 Barnes Log Cabin, an 1890s Photography Studio, a 1900 Assay Office, and many more! There won’t be an inflatable snow globe in sight, but there will be plenty of garland, bows, and greenery. Museum professionals will help guide you in determining appropriate decorations. Buildings need to be decorated by December 1, 2011. Download the Clock Tower Holidays Building Decorator Application/Contract and Clock Tower Holidays Building Decorator Guidelines to learn more.

Holiday Lamplight Tours Interpreters
Have you always wanted to dress up in an historical costume and talk about history? We are seeking enthusiastic people to help spread a little holiday cheer. Holiday Lamplight Tours Interpreters will be trained in sharing the history about a specific building, family, event, or activity. Fill out the Holiday Lamplight Tour Volunteer Application and fax, mail, or drop it off at the museum.

Holiday Lamplight Tours Volunteer Entertainers
Volunteer entertainers are asked to perform for only a portion of the event so that they may also take time to walk around and enjoy the event.  Of course, if they would like to volunteer for the whole evening, they are definitely free to do so! There are a variety of times and locations for entertaiment. Download the Holiday Lamplight Tours Volunteer Entertainer Application to learn more.
