Claraville, California

Located about 50 miles northeast of Bakersfield, Claraville was established during the mid 1860s. It was named for Clara Munckton, the first white child in camp. The community once boasted several hundred residences but was mainly abandoned by 1869. Nothing remains of the original site. In the 1930s, the area enjoyed a period of revival after the rediscovery of gold in the area. The post office, established June 15, 1940, was located 30 miles south of Weldon and 36 miles northeast of Caliente. It was discontinued on June 30, 1941, re-established January 1, 1949 and discontinued November 30, 1957.
