Hoover City, California
During the Great Depression of the 1930s, throngs of people left Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and other hard-hit states and moved west. Impoverished, many of these immigrants established make-shift communities on the outskirts of towns. These communities were often called Hoover Cities. Near Taft, one such Hoover City boasted 24 houses and two large "dormitories," which were abandoned foundries. Another Hoover City was north of Bakersfield along the Kern River.
