Keyesville, California

Known as the "first town in Kern County," Keyesville was named for Richard Keyes who discovered a nearby goldmine in 1853. The town was located about three miles west of Lake Isabella on the eastern base of the Greenhorn Mountain. Never an orderly town, the few businesses were built on the flat and the homes were built up the side of the slop. The post office was established in 1857 in what was Tulare County. Discontinued in 1868, it was restablished as Keyes in 1897 and again discontinued in 1902.
