School Tour General Information
PROGRAMS:
All our programs are designed to be age and grade appropriate.
Most programs last one hour (Living History Day and California History Day are 3 hour programs, Black Gold: The Oil Experience is a 2 hour program). Any program may be coupled with a self guided tour of the outdoor exhibits or an afternoon visit to that portion of the Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center appropriate for your grade level at no additional charge.
Each morning time slot has a fee, so signing up for more than one time slot will require more than one fee. A second tour is $2.00 per child. This ensures that our limited number of programs can serve the widest number of students.
The outdoor exhibits are appropriate for all ages. The age limit for the exhibits at the Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center must be observed at all times to reduce damage to the exhibits.
During the Native American Life lectures, other classes may not tour the lecture room housed in the Main Museum due to noise. Ticket office personnel will be happy to assist you in knowing when a lecture is in progress.
ARRANGING A VISIT:
Reservations are required for all groups visiting the Kern County Museum and Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center. Please call Cami Cortez at 661-868-8425 at least two weeks in advance. Teachers are responsible for the control and safety of their class while on museum grounds and for having adequate adult supervision, one adult for every six students. Pre-visit information will be sent once your tour is booked. Some teachers learning guides can be downloaded from our website: http://www.kcmuseum.org
LOCATION:
3801 Chester Avenue
Bakersfield, CA 93301
Please call Cami Cortez at 661-868-8425 for information or to book a school tour.
SCHOOL ADMISSION:
Up to 3 adults for every 10 children are free. Adults over that number pay the student fee. Siblings accompanying the group are charged the student fee. Please be prepared to pay with cash, check, purchase order or credit card. Guest passes and Friends of the Museum membership cards are not valid for school programs.
PARKING:
A large parking lot is located in front of the Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center and east of Stramler Park. Buses should park on Chester Avenue facing south or in the Stramler Park portion of the parking lot.
HANDICAPPED ACCESS:
The museum is only partially accessible to the physically challenged. Staff will gladly discuss necessary accomodations for classes with special needs.
RESTROOMS:
Large accessible restrooms are located at the museum's entrance, Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center and in two locations on the grounds. Adult chaperones will be given complete maps of the grounds upon arrival.
CANCELLATIONS and CHANGES IN ATTENDANCE NUMBER:
To operate in the most efficient and courteous manner possible, cancellations or changes in the number of students attending must be made at least two weeks in advance of the educational tour. Schools that do not follow this policy may be billed for the full amount of the scheduled tour.
MUSEUM STORE:
The Museum Store offers an excellent educational opportunity for students. In order to maximize the educational opportunity and ensure each student receives adequate supervision and assistance, we ask for a child to adult ratio of six to one and no more than two groups of students in the store at any one time. Students should know about tax and make only one trip to the register.
Alternatively, we offer prepackaged gift bags containing items representative of specific tours at a very reasonable price. You will receive additional information in your pre-visit field trip materials.
