Supplemental Autism Program

An after-school program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

The Supplemental Autism Program is a contract between Kern Regional Center and Kern County Superintendent of Schools, Special Education Division, to provide a structured after-school environment for students with autism. The program is coordinated with each participant's public day school program. The staff is trained in the Special Education Division Structured Teaching methodology, which incorporates a full range of intervention strategies including Discrete Trial Training and Social Skills Building.

The Supplemental Autism Program was created to provide a structured after-school learning environment for students with diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorders/Asperger Syndrome. Thematic teaching is used to develop skills throughout the year with creative arts and crafts, community-based instruction, and social skills development. Participants in this program must be Kern Regional Center clients and must be referred and authorized by Kern Regional Center.

LOCATION
The program is located at the Kern County Museum near the Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center. The location provides access to indoor and outdoor activities. Child activities and community activities are immediately available. The site is completely fenced for safety and security. Transportation is arranged through the district of service and a private vendor.

INSTRUCTION
The Supplemental Autism Program offers individualized instruction in both individual and small groups. The pre-school children attend from 2-4 pm. The elementary students attend from 2:30-4:30pm.
