Stock Corral

Horses roamed the vast landscape of North America for millions of years before going extinct around 8,000 to 10,000 years ago.

The Spanish explorer, Hernán Cortés, brought fifteen horses with his expedition to Mexico reintroducing the horse to North America. Horses spread rapidly across the continent through breeding and trade between the Spanish and indigenous people.

Horses played an important part in the westward migration across the United States providing transportation for people, their belongings, food and other goods.

Corrals like this were once used throughout Kern County as an enclosure for horses and cattle. This wooden corral was constructed on the museum grounds in 2004.
