Ferlin Husky
Ferlin Husky (aka Terry Preston and Simon Crum) came to Bakersfield in 1950 to work for KBIS radio. The show was broadcast live from the Rainbow Gardens (now the Basque Club) dance hall located on Union Avenue. While in East Bakersfield, Husky allowed a young singer named Leonard Sipes to live in his home. Husky recommended the young artist change his name to Tommy Collins. Husky also had ties to Cousin Herb Henson, Fuzzy Owen and Lewis Talley. Eventually, Husky reverted to the role of guitar player for Tommy Collins. He got his big break when a duet with Jean Shepard titled A Dear John Letter became a national hit. He left Collins band. In his place, stepped a young musician named Buck Owens.
