Blacksmith Shop

callowayBlacksmith: Blacksmithing was among the most common of all trades in 19th century communities. Early in the century, blacksmiths did iron working almost exclusively, while a special type of smith, known as a farrier, did horseshoeing. By the late 1800s, a blacksmith provided ironworking, horseshoeing, wagon-tire shrinking and machinery repair.

HISTORY:
This blacksmith's shop was built at the Calloway Ranch around 1890. This is the oldest blacksmith's shop in the county still standing. The Kern County Land Company donated this historic structure to the museum in 1950.
