Carpentry was an important trade during the 1800s when most structures in Kern County were constructed of wood.

Carpenters built structures, vehicles, furniture, barrels, coffins and other objects from wood. Buildings constructed of brick also required the skill of a carpenter to install doors, window casings, moldings, floors and interior adornments.

Carpenters cut, joined and shaped wood using various tools including saws, hammers, awls, drills, planes, chisels, drawknives, spokeshaves and froes to construct everything from vehicles to barns to ornate homes.

This exhibit displays artifacts utilized in a carpenter’s shop around 1900.

Dr. Clarence and Edna Compton owned this structure, originally a carriage shed, for over 50 years. This building was formerly located at 1911 17th Street in Bakersfield. Clark Gustafson donated this building in 1977.
