Bonnie Owens

bonnieOwens: Bonnie Owens came to Bakersfield from Mesa, Arizona in 1951 after separating from Buck Owens. Buck Owens soon followed, but the two remained separated. Bonnie worked as a waitress at local clubs like the Blackboard Café and the Clover Club. She had permission to sing whenever she felt like singing (usually a couple of times a night). Bonnie continued her waitress job after she and the rest of her Clover Club band mates were hired to be the band for Cousin Herb’s Trading Post Gang Show. Bonnie even continued her waitress duties after having some success recording. In 1964, Bonnie re-cut Just Between the Two of Us with Merle Haggard and it spent 26 weeks on the Country Music Charts. She originally recorded it with Fuzzy Owen. In 1965, Bonnie Owens married Merle Haggard. She joined Haggard’s band The Strangers. Owens and Haggard divorced in 1978 and Owens stopped touring with Haggard for a while but then continued to tour with him until she moved back to Bakersfield a few years ago. bonnieowensAward: In 1991, Capitol Records released Bonnie Owens Greatest Hits. Bonnie Owens passed away on April 24, 2006 at the age of 76.
