Featured ImageEarthquake damage at east portal of Tunnel 3 on the Bakersfield to Tehachapi route. On July 21, 1952, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck Kern County. The epicenter was at the Southern Pacific Railroad line southeast of Bealville. There, the quake cracked reinforced-concrete tunnels and shortened the distance between the portals of two tunnels by about 2.5 meters and bent the rails into S-shaped curves. The earthquake ultimately claimed 12 lives and caused $60 million in property damage.
